Williams Advanced Engineering
(WAE) and JPA Design have jointly
worked on a Formula One-inspired
design for aircraft interiors,
aimed at delivering an enhanced
passenger experience that also
enables airlines to fly lighter, more
efficient aircraft. Combining JPA
Design’s expertise in cabins with
WAE’s expertise in the use of
lightweight materials and rapid
product development, the proposal
makes greater use of cabin space,
enhancing passenger comfort and
maximising revenue.
The first of the technologies to
be revealed is a composite seat
structure made using materials
processes and expertise from WAE.

benefits to passengers and airlines
alike,” explains Craig Wilson,
managing director of WAE. “The
maximisation of available space
and the use of lightweight materials
to do more in the same amount
of space on an aircraft is at
the heart of the work we do
commercialising F1-derived
technology.”
The two companies believe
that there is still great potential
to make a step-change in cabin
layouts, passenger comfort, fuelsavings
and carbon emission
reductions, compared with existing
design approaches, through the
application of new interior design
and lightweight materials. The
partnership looks to capitalise
on this potential through using
proprietary technologies from
both parties to save weight, whilst
increasing comfort and space.
Rebel.Aero has been developing interesting seating designs
since it launched in 2015, and the company has enjoyed
success in the Crystal Cabin Awards with its S:4 (shortlisted)
and its original folding seat (2016 winner). Continuing its goal
of disrupting the aircraft seating market, this year Rebel.Aero
has again designed a new economy class seating product –
and again it is a little different from the competition.
The company reported high levels of interest in last year’s
reveal of the Joy ultra-lightweight economy seat concept,
which has led to this year’s launch of a more mature design
which focuses on the key features that customers have shown
the most interest in and requested to see more of.
The new version of Joy was introduced at Aircraft Interiors
Expo 2019 as a super-lightweight staggered triple seat
configuration that the company believes answers all the
demands that modern airlines are looking for in a costeffective
and competitive seating solution.
