A LIGHTER OPTION
The Young Engineers (TYE) has designed a variety of
high-strength plastic inserts and fasteners, typically
moulded from Ultem or Torlon, which can be used as
drop-in replacements for some metal inserts. The
units are claimed to offer ‘significant’ weight savings
compared with metal inserts, while also eliminating
galvanic corrosion and the use of hazardous chemicals
and coatings, making them useful for REACH
compliance.
A variety of lightweight and/or miniature versions of
the company’s honeycomb panel fasteners are available,
some designed for panels as thin as 0.125in (3.2mm),
while others have reduced flange diameters and/or
thinner flanges and bodies to reduce overall installed
weight (via a lighter insert and reduced adhesive
volume). TYE has also designed a range of lightweight,
high-strength aluminium self-locking threaded inserts
with REACH-compliant coatings.
