LONG - H AUL C ONCEPTS
CREATE MORE
USING LESS
The space constraints of a narrow-body aircraft can at
times lead to passenger anxiety, something which could
worsen with such aircraft being deployed for long-haul
journeys. A potential solution devised by Elliott Koehler,
creative director of JPA Design, is a concept premium
economy seat that gives back more personal space to
the passenger within a small space envelope through
the thoughtful use of materials, construction and design.
The seat (pictured below) has a robust, lightweight and
efficient composite monocoque construction, a design
that is currently being developed within Innovate UK,
a UK Government partnership with Williams Advanced
Engineering and certification specialist, SWS for a new
generation of premium seating. The seat design is
intended to allow passengers to store their personal
belongings directly in front of them, eliminating the
need for overhead bins, freeing up precious space and
creating a more open and expansive feel to the cabin.

Premium Pitch
Pitch was the first seating manufacturer to develop
a fixed-recline economy seat for the single-aisle
passenger aircraft market, the design of which was
recently upgraded to the PF3000 model, which offers
3in of additional leg room over a standard economy
seat at a 28in pitch.
Pitch has been working to develop the PF3000
into a premium seating product, and has created the
‘Q premium’ concept with the Design Q consultancy.
The design features a 20.5in seat width and a seatbackmounted
tablet holder, and with the middle seat
converted into a wide centre console with stowage
space, airlines can offer a new class of premium
seating that can be converted from a two to a threeseater,
as required.
Pitch Aircraft Seating’s chief designer, Gary Doy,
believes there is genuine scope for such a concept to be
developed for single-aisle cabins in the next few years.
