Prepare for a threat of backlash
For the emerging long-haul market,
HAECO Cabin Solutions’ SVP of
engineering and product development,
Jose Pevida, foresees passenger needs
becoming a bigger driver for the look and
feel of narrow-body cabins more than
the airline industry.
“The threat of a backlash to
densification is very real; as passengers
travel these longer routes on smaller
aircraft than they may be accustomed
to, it could force airlines and aircraft
manufacturers to make sweeping
changes to the cabin”, he warns.
His solution is to balance the

benefits, with HAECO’s new premium
seat, the Eclipse, developed to do just
that by offering a five-abreast solution
for the narrow-body cabin that enhances
passenger comfort and privacy, while
also increasing cabin density.
With sustainability also being a key
concern of many of today’s travellers,
he recommends that cabin hardware
should be able to be broken down and
recycled at the end of its service life. In
line with this thinking, HAECO is exploring
new composite materials that can not
only be reclaimed and recycled, but
also configured in ways that traditional
materials cannot.
Café society
Galleys are often fitted in areas of the aircraft
that passengers would find least appealing, to
maximise the seating space available in the
wider, lighter areas. However, people today spend
increasing amounts of time in open-plan kitchens
and cafes, and the team at JPA Design believe
that passengers should be able to experience
a similar convivial environment on board aircraft.
“Rather than taking up valuable space in an
already constrained narrow-body aircraft, the
kitchen should reflect that favourite place in
your home and become the approachable
destination of the cabin,” says Elliott Koehler,
creative director at JPA Design (pictured below).
“The galley should no longer be an area
that feels austere to passengers, but rather
a welcoming and open space where they can
socialise, or prepare a drink or a snack, while
feeling at home and at ease. Materials inspired
by the home environment, plants as often found
in our favourite cafés, and beautiful domestic
lighting can showcase the refreshments, creating
a perfect Instagrammable travel moment.”
