Indeed the optimal process for a project depends on
the scope of work and the desired outcome. As Nina
Schulz, head of product sales for aircraft modification
and base maintenance at Lufthansa Technik AG explains,
“A change can range from a more cosmetic approach –
deep cleaning, paint touch-ups, changes of dress covers,
carpets, finishes on monuments – to an extensive
cabin retrofit, which basically involves installing
a new cabin with new seats, new IFE/IFC, and even
new monuments such as galleys and lavatories.
Specification and delivery times for monuments,
seats and IFE are the main driver for the planning
period, followed by the design engineering and
certification work.
“Depending on the desires of the respective
product development/passenger experience
departments, this timeframe can easily reach two years.
A smaller – I call it cosmetic – approach might be feasible
within a few weeks,” she adds. “As a side note, standard

short-term leases with leaner programme timelines. “We

Aside from creating a need for substitute aircraft,
the Boeing 737 MAX groundings have had an
effect on airlines’ decision-making policies for the
refurbishment of their existing fleets, according to
David Kelly VP of marketing at HAECO Americas.
“What we have seen in recent times, as a
secondary effect of the B737 MAX grounding,
is that some operators were planning to do
modifications, but are waiting for their MAXs.
What we believe it is going to do is create an
upswing for those other fleets, as airlines decide
to undertake those modifications that were
planned before”.
