010 ANNUAL SHOWCASE 2020
SINGLE-AISLE FLEET SIZE CIRCA 3,000NM
Table 1 details the current in-service fleet of single-aisle
aircraft capable of performing flight sectors of 3,000NM
and beyond. Stored aircraft could mean maintenance
storage, awaiting passenger-to-freighter conversion, and
awaiting airline entry into service or transition, amongst
other factors.
Table 2 details the number of single-aisle aircraft retired
during the last 12 months that can fly 3,000NM and
beyond. Please note that the 2019 run-rate is reduced
for 2019, likely because of extended fleet requirements
following the grounding of the B737 MAX.
ECONOMICS OF LONG-HAUL SINGLE AISLES
Table 3 shows the comparative value of a new popular
single-aisle aircraft and a new popular twin aisle. These
values are related to acquisition cost in a single-unit sale
of an aircraft.
A irlines are likely to face several challenges and
opportunities as increasing numbers of singleaisle
aircraft are flying longer sectors. If we take
single-aisle aircraft in the fleet or on order backlogs capable
of flying circa 3,000NM or greater as the benchmark, they
represent 90% of the total single-aisle aircraft fleet flying
with more than 100 passengers. Whilst we acknowledge
that, for the most part, these aircraft will not be flying five
to seven-hour missions, research shows that the growth
for long-haul usage of these aircraft could represent 15%
of the fleet.
As a result, as customer demands and requirements
on board increase, regulatory authorities, airlines, aircraft
manufacturers, designers and interiors manufacturers will
be faced with the challenge of maximising the efficiency
and revenue-earning capability of single-aisle aircraft, with
most likely less passenger densification in order to provide
a good-quality travel experience.
