SEK ISUI S PI
“ AN INNOVATIVE, AFFORDABLE
CUSTOMISATION SOLUTION
FOR ECONOMY SEATING”
Lift and Sekisui SPI used their expertise
to play to each other’s strengths, creating
an innovative, affordable customisation
solution for economy class seating
that neither company could create
individually. Together, they discovered
a new way to elevate the passenger
experience in economy class and for
airlines to distinguish themselves from
their competition.

ANNUAL SHOWCASE 2020 099
as is the case with laminated materials.
A multi-design template (which included
multiple seatback cove designs on one
thermoplastic sheet) was created to work
with Lift’s existing vacuum-forming tool,
so the design could be customised without
customising the tool itself.
Another benefit of Infused Imaging is
the opportunity to use colour similarity in
the certification process. Infused Imaging
does not change the material’s physical
properties, such as flammability, chemical
resistance and impact resistance,
providing cost savings – especially by
eliminating the need for recertification.
The seatback cove sits at passengers’
eye level, making it a critical area for HIC
(head injury criterion) requirements, which
include 16G testing. Lift chose Kydex
6565HI, which is specifically designed to
support HIC requirements to achieve top
material performance. Using Kydex 6565HI
allowed Lift to engineer the seatback with
fewer restrictions because the material is
designed to have ductile impact properties
that support HIC compliance.
Lift brought design and material
performance together by combining Kydex
6565HI with Infused Imaging technology.
They collaborated with Sekisui SPI’s design
team, reviewing mock-ups and adjusting
colours until the concepts fit their vision.
Infused Imaging is a secondary process
that integrates custom design into the
surface of the thermoplastic sheet instead
of spreading throughout multiple layers,
