premium push-in latches that ‘vanish’ into
the door face and are ideal for doors in
passenger-oriented environments such
as bars and self-service galleys.
The galley also features an IWG
touchscreen UV water dispenser which
pours potable drinking water, reducing the
amount of water bottles and resultant
waste onboard and creating a spaceefficient
onboard destination feature for
passengers. Furthermore, the touchscreen
interface simplifies maintenance for
ground crew.
At the time of this Design Showcase
going to print, the production-ready
features include premium paddle latches,
the flush pull-out table, the integrated
noteholder trim and the pull-out pantry.
Offerable features include embedded task
lighting, the improved roller blind, the ice
drawer and the IWG touchscreen UV water
dispenser. Conceptual features include the
Magic mirror, animated RGBW lighting and
invisible latching.
CHANGING SPACES
At AIX 2019, AIM Altitude unveiled
Ultraflex, a visionary communal space
offering solutions to passengers’ and
airlines’ concerns surrounding ultra-longhaul
flights. The concept was to provide
a multifunctional destination area where
passengers could move around, socialise,
dine and even exercise.

070 ANNUAL SHOWCASE 2020
AIM Altitude
was a major partner
in developing
The Loft for Virgin
Atlantic’s A350-
Ultraflex incorporated the next stage
of galley requirements, offering a deli
galley and ‘grab-and-go’-style catering.
Passenger demand for self-service is one
of the trends discovered through AIM
Altitude’s research, enabling the airline to
offer a more personal choice and a wider
variety of foods, catering for broader
dietary requirements. The deli galley offers
more of a café-style approach, with a
relaxed and sociable atmosphere. An
extended-height refrigerated displaycabinet
offers increased capacity, standard
drawer stowage and a visually appealing
food layout.
The ethos behind Ultraflex is that it is
adaptable. The monuments are standalone
pieces that can be combined to
create custom areas. Each monument
is flexible in itself and offers a variety of
uses. There is a perch bar with a central
trough that allows bottles and glasses to
be easily stowed. Standard containers can
be slid into a secure rail for easy supply of
refreshments, and work-deck inserts slide
into place to provide a café or cocktail bar,

GALLEY DESIGN
depending upon the time of day. This is
perhaps the ultimate in incorporating
galley functions within the more social
areas of the aircraft cabin.
The third-generation galley was
designed by AIM Altitude to blend
seamlessly with the Ultraflex monuments.
It can be situated backing onto the
Ultraflex area, creating the staging for the
entrance to the space. In this way, meals
can still be offered to seated passengers,
with the galley designed to be a stylish
feature in itself; still very much functional,
but blending with the premium area.
OPENING UP THE OPTIONS
In a competitive market, driving standards
and innovation will be key, with broad
ranges of galley types enabling diverse
ranges of food options and dining
experiences.
As airlines adapt to meet the new and
greater demands of their passengers and
to show greater differentiation from their
competitors, the galley area will be vital
in offering the level and variety of food
service required. The changes will need to
be both functional and visual, meeting the
pressures of a new style of service, as well
as the expectations of a more premium
look throughout the whole cabin.
