SEK ISUI S PI
SEATBACK INNOVATION
Lift by EnCore, a Boeing company, is collaborating with Sekisui SPI, the
manufacturer of Kydex thermoplastics, on an innovative B737 seatback cove
I
t’s no secret that customisation
for economy seating has been
a rarity in aircraft interior design.
The same seatback design has been
haunting the dreams of weary passengers
for years; but not vivid nightmares – rather
varying shades of grey. With little to invite
daydreaming or to inspire creativity on
flights, economy seating usually leaves
passengers devoid of pleasing design.
However, aircraft interior companies Lift
and EnCore, both recently acquired by
Boeing, are redefining the narrative in the
air, revolutionising everything from seats,
galleys and lavatories, to sidewalls and
ceilings in commercial aircraft. Partnering
with Sekisui SPI, manufacturer of Kydex
thermoplastics, Lift by EnCore is further
enhancing the passenger experience – this
time in economy class seating.
To begin the revolution, Lift proactively
engaged Kydex in the early design stages
to collaborate on a thermoplastics concept
that could breathe new life into the
economy seating environment. Because
this area has not seen significant design
transformations in the past decade, the
time had come to improve the space
for travellers and airlines, using ingenious
design and application. Their design goal?
To create a smart design that encourages
customisation instead of hindering it.
The result was the B737 seatback cove,
showcased at Lift’s stand at Aircraft
Interiors Expo 2019 in Germany.
Lift’s design team realised that
seatbacks in economy seating are valuable
