Power in vs Volumetric Flow Rate for the 28V version Static Pressure Rise vs Volumetric Flow Rate for the 28V version
EMP remains one of the largest
producers of mechanical coolant
pumps for the North American heavy
duty industry for nearly 20 years, and
has been producing electric coolant
pumps for demanding applications
since 2006. The engineering and
service teams at EMP lean on this
experience to help ensure customers
are successful when implementing
components into new or existing
systems. The WP150 was not only
developed with pump requirements
in mind, but system integration as
well by producing a component that
is user friendly to implement and
helps minimize system design
sensitivities where possible.
The WP150 can simplify coolant
system design and allow engineers
and designers to focus on the many
other challenges associated with
vehicle propulsion electrification.

of pump output can help stabilize
operating temperatures for critical
electronics, minimizing parasitic
power draw and improving full
vehicle performance.
The other benefit of CAN
communication is diagnostic
capability, so EMP is working closely
with SAE to ensure OBD II
compliance on the WP150 and all
SmartFlow components. As more
electronic components are added
to vehicle architecture, it is important
to feature the ability to relay data on
its condition via diagnostic
messaging. This helps end users
make maintenance and repair
decisions to minimize vehicle down
time. EMP’s software is set up to
provide users flexibility to make the
implementation into the vehicle
network as easy as possible.
Autobaud rate detection allows for
integration into 250KB, 500KB and
1MB systems. Custom calibrations
are available to users to provide
multiple addressing and PGN
options to best suit an application.
lower flow pumps with this single
pump. This simplifies mechanical
packaging by eliminating manifolds
and reducing the number of hoses,
clamps and sealing joints. Utilizing
a single pump also simplifies wiring
and reduces connector count. All
of these integration benefits help
to increase the overall robustness
and reliability of the system. EMP
is also working with a leading fuel
cell manufacturer to validate the
WP150 on larger fuel cell models.
In addition to component
expertise, EMP has been electrifying
cooling systems since the early
2000s and has been providing
cooling systems for hybrid and
electric vehicles since 2006.
Cooling systems, whether for
engines, electronics or motors
provide some unique challenges.
EMP has provided cooling system
components and entire integrated
systems into the oil and gas,
agriculture, o highway, on highway,
stationary power generation and
numerous other industries.
To fully utilize the diagnostic
capabilities of the WP150 pump,
along with all SmartFlow
components, it interfaces with
EMP’s service tool to allow users
to download data from the device
and send in for diagnostic analysis.
This data includes fault code
information and application
information stored by the pump and
can help the user better understand
system operation and opportunities
for optimization. This service tool
also allows the user to flash software
updates and new calibrations along
with manually controlling devices
for troubleshooting.
EMP has been providing electric
coolant pumps into the fuel cell
market for many years and this
experience carries over into the
WP150. All the wetted components
of the pump are made from
materials chosen specifically to be
corrosion resistant and compatible
with stringent fuel cell requirements.
The high flow rate of the WP150 also
allows customers to replace two
