Low-noise microphones
Given the minimal noise
generated by modern electric
vehicle propulsion systems,
undesirable sounds that used
to be masked within the cabin
now become more apparent,
representing a greater sound
quality issue. This requires
more stringent cabin noise
testing to foster improved
passenger comfort.
PCB’s model 378A04, the
industry’s fi rst prepolarized IEC
61094-4 low-noise microphone
and preamplifi er
system, enables measurement
of extremely low amplitudes.
Previously, this was only possible
with expensive and bulky 200V
externally polarized solutions. The
378A04 is comprised of a highsensitivity
free-fi eld microphone
and custom-tailored preamplifi er
designed to measure sound
pressure levels to 5.5dBA (typical)
over a wide frequency, ranging from
5Hz to 20kHz. The system can be
powered by a 4mA-20 mA constant
current supply within the costeffi
cient, prepolarized (0V) design.
The benefi ts of using the
prepolarized 378A04 are
a reduced initial sensor investment
and enhanced interchangeability
with other sensors. Compared
to their externally polarized
alternatives, this 0V design
uses cost-effective power
supplies, coaxial cables, and
BNC connectors that can be
shared with other ICP-compliant
accelerometers, force and
pressure sensors. Portability and
interchangeability with other
sensors minimizes test set-up
time and reduces the overall cost
per-channel, making the 378A04
an outstanding microphone
for measurements critical to
developing quieter electric and
autonomous vehicles.

Proventia’s modular battery test
chambers (2.8m x 4.0m x 2.5m)
accommodate full-size EV battery
packs. The chamber enables
parallel testing with an additional
pack or several modules when
the battery cycler
capacity is split
accordingly. The
climatic chamber
is watertight and
thermally isolated,
providing a full
temperature range
(-40°C to 90°C -40°F
to 194°F). The change rate can
be chosen between 1-5K/min,
depending on the fi nal confi guration
and heat load. The adjustable
humidity range is between RH10
and RH95%.
A separate device space
accommodates liquid conditioning
systems, instrumentation, data
acquisition and a master automation
system. Pack monitoring is
undertaken with two different
types of
special camera – CCTV and thermal
imaging – providing automatic
temperature threshold alarm
capabilities. Tests can be controlled
from the main building
or an optional control room module.
The Proventia EV battery test
chambers meet EUCAR Hazard
Level 6 requirements and come
with full safety features, including
a preferred fi re suppression system.
Wide double doors with emergency
exit features ensure the full and
safe utilization of space. The
level of operational security can
be increased by placing the test
chambers outdoors.
