In 1891, ABB started for
the electrifi cation of
trains. 129 years later it’s
still doing this, but now cars
have come into the picture.
To support increased
adoption of e-mobility
solutions, the roll out of
various new electric vehicles across Europe, featuring the
latest battery technology, needs to be mirrored by the
development of a widespread charging infrastructure
network to satisfy growing demand. Therefore the
rollout will be extremely important.
Projects such as Ionity, with backing from major
OEMs such as Ford, BMW, Daimler, and Audi, has its
goal of 400 charging stations across Europe and is hugely
important. This is combined with fast charging
technology from ABB that off ers 200km of range with
just eight minutes of charging. This technology evolution
will only go further, off ering faster charging and more
range in a quicker time.
What is important for the development of the charging
side is that car manufacturers, technology companies,
utility and grid companies, as well as the governments–
although some governments are faster to act than others
– will need to develop the infrastructure plans for this.
These four players need to come together. Electric car
availability will not be the issue in the near future, it will
be the charging and the grid stability that needs to be
developed. There is fi nancing out there readily available,
and companies such as ABB are ready on the technical
side as we are creating faster and faster chargers.
Therefore we need the regulations and other parties to
be ready to be part of the ecosystem.
We talk to many city administrations around the world
about electrifying transport solutions. However, it is a
huge challenge. In many cases you will need the support
of the political parties because mayors will have a huge
sway when you are talking about plans for electrifying
mass transport. This political will and support is the
same in countries outside of Europe also.
On the bus and transit side, which is another
important aspect to the electrifi cation revolution, we are
now able deliver charging capabilities of up to 600KW.
For convenience, we have charging solutions where
compatible e-buses are able to charge without needing
to plug in, instead topping up their batteries using
automated charging solutions, while stationary at
specifi c bus stops.
These are technology revolutions that are necessary for
the rollout and we are developing technology faster than
the regulator can keep pace. Therefore, all parties will
need to pull together to make sure that the charging
infrastructure keeps up with electric vehicle ownership.
The one subject that comes up when speaking to top
European car manufacturers is how the charging
infrastructure rollout can be accelerated. But this is not
a technology question, it is a regulation and utility
company question. These variables are all essential if
we are to achieve successful EV adoption.
