Telling our
sector’s stories
The way engineering and manufacturing have stepped
up during the Covid-19 pandemic to address
shortages of medical and protective equipment has
been truly inspiring.
From ventilators designed, manufactured and
supplied in the space of weeks to 3D-printed medical
visors, the flood of stories of technological ingenuity and dedication that
we have seen in recent months has been amazing.
All too often, engineering and manufacturing are unsung heroes of
the economy, with their vital, life-saving role in our society overlooked
or even belittled. Their contribution during this crisis has corrected
perceptions of these sectors.
For this reason, I feel it is important to acknowledge some of the
contributions made by Irish engineering and manufacturing companies
over the last few months in these pages.
The cover story of this issue runs to five pages, but sadly even that
isn’t enough to mention every company or individual that has stepped
up during the pandemic to offer their services to the prodcution of lifesaving
equipment.
The stories include companies that have switched the whole of their
production to this effort, which in some cases has meant having to let
down existing customers who in turn have shown
enormous selflessness in being understanding
and supportive of these actions.
Such stories are inspirational and we are
happy and proud to help tell them.
