As the lockdown begins to recede, businesses
Facing up to the
‘New normal’
everywhere now face the vexed question of what
the working environment to which their employees
are starting to return will look like.
The need to maintain social distancing has
occasioned the rapid adoption of many technologies,
including video conferencing for online meetings; webinars and the working
on and sharing of files with employees who are working remotely.
Essentially, the past few months have seen an extraordinary
acceleration of trends that were already underway. In particular, one
thinks of the move towards home-working, which has long been talked
about as an eventual destination, but in the space of a few months has
become ‘the new normal’ To give an idea of just how much has changed
and how quickly, companies that in March took for granted the majority
of their staff being office-based for the foreseeable future are looking at
the reverse being the case in September.
Another trend that was steadily gaining ground prior to the pandemic
was automation. And, given the need to minimise close physical contact
among employees, it seems likely that increased automation is going to be
a fact of life in many workplaces.
The question, of course, is what this does to the workforce and to
industry as a whole. The mantra has always been
that automation will not cost jobs, merely
liberate workers from mundane tasks. The
question is whether that will still hold
good in the current climate?
