Peak practice: How the addition of a mobile
display solution is helping to enhance the
Carolina Panthers’ practice sessions
Owners of sporting facilities are
increasingly looking to add
digital displays wherever
possible. Concourse walls,
architectural supports, press
rooms, courtside and perimeter pitches,
suspended above the playing surface and
more are now adorned with displays.
While the introduction of displays within stadia
are typically for the benefit of fans attending live
events, there’s another opportunity to be realized
with practice facilities.
For example, the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings
has installed a large new display at TCO
Performance Center where the team holds
its training camp, and the University of
Oklahoma also installed an LED display inside
its football practice facility.
More recently, the NFL’s Carolina Panthers
has also introduced a versatile display
solution at the team’s new pop-up dome
practice facility near its home stadium in
Charlotte, North Carolina. However, this
installation takes a new direction.
The Carolina Panthers contracted display
experts Daktronics to deliver two 9.5ft high
by 17ft wide (2.9m x 5.1m) LED video displays
that boast 8mm line spacing, but also feature
the ability to be mobile.
To maximize the display flexibility and
capability, the Panthers had both of the
displays mounted to trailers and outfitted
with Daktronics’ Show Control System. This
enables them to be moved from location-tolocation
depending on the practice or event
taking place – all the while still offering an
easy-to-use control solution.
Mobile coverage
The prominent use of the new technology
in Charlotte began with team practices,
where one display was located at each
end of the facility. They enable the team to
enhance training with a new visual tool that
could help productivity and performance
The content shown on the screens helps
the coaches and players simulate game
situations and gain information, or watch drill
replays instantly throughout a day’s training.
In addition to this, there are other planned
uses for the wheeled display technology.
Season ticket holder parties and other private
events can benefit by using the display, or
road games can be shown during events

along with game highlights or previous
matchups of the team. On the football
operations side, the team is exploring the
option of using the displays for in-depth film
study to analyze plays and opponents.
The team also plans to use them to help
support the community with the displays
being transported to particular event
locations, such as team trips to the local
children’s hospital or for sponsored events.
The Panthers’ purchase of the displays
eliminates the cost of renting equipment for
these types of events and they can continue
to develop additional uses that will further
benefit the team and the community long
into the future.
The versatility of these mobile displays
allows for a maximum return on investment
for the Panthers while improving the
spectator, player, coach and community
experience at any number of events. n
