The right WIM for
the right situation
If you are looking for a weighin
motion (WIM) solution, do
you really know what you are
after? Would you know which
features you need and which
you don’t? WIM as a general
term covers a wide array of
different solutions.
It is very tempting to write
a list of all of the possible
functions, but it usually ends
with a cost analysis. The
functions can include traffic
data collection, pre-selection
of overloaded vehicles, direct
enforcement, tyre enforcement,
toll-per-tonne application freeflow,
multi-tyre detection, truck
size detection. But can you
really make sense of these
functions, do you really know
which functions you need, or
do you even really need them?
A WIM of a choice
The direct enforcement WIM
system, for instance, looks very

different situations
> CrossWIM systems come
with an open platform
offering wide possibilities
> Data-collection WIM is
good entry point to gain an
understanding of the
volume of overloaded
vehicles on the road
> High-tech OptiWIM
solutions allow for freeflow
measurements
> Direct enforcement makes
it impossible for
overloaded vehicles to
avoid detection and a fine
the traffic, meaning no
overloaded truck escapes. But is
this the adequate solution at this
moment when you do not know
what the real volume of
overloaded vehicles is on
a specific road? In this case, it
is may be better to start with
a data collection WIM with an
approximate weighing accuracy
at a more reasonable price. Then,
if a real and justified need for
an enforcement function is
recognized, the most efficient
way can be to upgrade the
existing data collection system
and move it to a higher level
by adding on an additional
enforcement function.
WIM strengths
The real strength of a WIM
station mainly depends on the
WIM sensor’s ability, which
basically determines the
accuracy of weighing. Then, the
WIM control unit and its smart
engine generates verified data
and offers useful functions.
With these combined, we have
variations of WIM stations with
varied purposes from data
collection to direct enforcement
as mentioned previously.
CrossWIM systems and their
control units come with an open
solution, which enables them to

be combined with a wide range
of weighing sensors and other
peripheries such as size
measurement sensors, ALPR/
ANPR or overview cameras,
variable message signs and
displays. It makes the solution
universal with an ability to
cover all purposes discussed
here, but, most importantly,
it is always ultimately designed
according to the requirements
of each individual installation
depending on the specific
needs. Need a cost effective
solution for data collection? Yes!

and ready.
