Engineering
tomorrow
›I have found that focusing on the purity
and beauty of engineering excellence
has provided a welcome respite amid
the tragedy of the Covid-19 crisis. I hope you
will also fi nd some pleasure in this issue of
Vehicle Dynamics International, as well as
some inspiration for your next automotive
engineering projects.
As you will see, we have brought together the
best of today’s and tomorrow’s vehicle dynamics
developments, theories and technologies, and
I have to say they are rather impressive. One
particularly interesting project is the Ford
Mustang Mach-E. Applying the iconic pony
badge to an electric SUV may sound like an
automotive contradiction, but we secured
some time in the car alongside Ford’s vehicle
dynamics manager, Geert van Noyen, to discover
why the car deserves the Mustang name.
Looking further ahead, a new contributor to
our title, vehicle dynamics expert Paul Beever,
shares some insights into how driver controls
could be improved in the future to enhance
driver enjoyment, engagement and safety
through an evolution of control software.
We have also found some pleasant distraction
in deciding the winners of the 2020 Vehicle
Dynamics International Awards. The shortlist for
this year was highly impressive and in itself a
celebration of the fi nest automotive engineering
from the past 12 months. Deciding the winners
was tough, and there were some extremely
close-fought contests, but our international jury
settled on some fantastic victors.
We look forward to seeing more industry
innovation over the next 12 months, and indeed
to seeing happier times return. Keep innovating,
keep positive, and stay safe.
