editor’s view
Summer in the UK means air shows. They present an
excellent opportunity for a wider audience to marvel
at the array of different aircraft the industry has
successfully developed and produced over the last
hundred or so years.
It means I have conversations about aerospace with
people who don’t normally have much of an interest
in it. They enjoy the spectacle of the air shows and I
always try and capitalize socially on this interest by
sharing my own stories of impressive aircraft I have
seen at air shows and press events.
However its more difficult to communicate
effectively the technical achievements and hard
work that I know is behind the development of these
amazing aircraft and keeps them in the air.
This magazine goes some way in communicating
that effort and talent. It’s a fantastic advert for the
future of the aerospace sector. There are more exciting,
innovative projects happening in new areas right now
in the aerospace sector than I have ever known. From
the (re)development of supersonic passenger airliners
to the many urban air taxi projects around the world,
now is a great time to report on the aerospace industry.
It’s also a great time to consider a career in aviation.
To most of those that travel regularly by air, the
experience may be less spectacular. The drudge
through the airport, cramped economy seating and
delays all serve to normalize, what nevertheless
remains a remarkable engineering achievement. Air
shows can reignite that spark of an interest and in a
similar way the features and reports in this magazine
not only provide a source of information for engineers,
but also provide a little inspiration about the great work
going on in testing throughout the industry.
