Voice is still the
linchpin of business
Last month saw World Voice Day come and go with little rigor as businesses, or at least those
with a vested interest, took the opportunity to tell us how important the role of voice is in the
workplace. For several years now we (the royal “we”) have been talking about the demise of
voice revenues, and the proliferation of data services is well documented. However, apparently
78% of workers still make voice calls for work, says Fuze after surveying
6,600 workers.
Although we now have a million and one ways to get hold of each other
voice is still a central point of contact for many, although the emphasis has
shifted to the smartphone. In the same piece of research 45% of workers said
they believe desk phones are non-essential or simply not required.
Is this all down to the Millennials and Gen Z taking up their place
in the workforce? From workers aged between 18 and 24, 18% have
never used a landline phone!
is is hardly surprising news to anyone who regularly reads
Comms Business but it does demonstrate how devices are such
an important part of the communications landscape and its
important to be able to deliver services over an array of options.
Google Voice has recently added some new developments,
its VoIP features had stagnated for years, and is now available
to G-Suite users in several key markets including the UK. Although
Google’s renewed commitment to voice is not really surprising given
Microsoft’s ambitions, it does signify that spoken communications
aren’t going anywhere in a hurry and they are an important part of any
UC solution coming to market.
If you are looking to keep up to date with the market, whether
that be from a voice, IT, cloud, data or any other perspective the
registration for Channel Live is now open. e event will return to
the NEC on the 11th and 12th September and will not only serve as
a great educational platform but also as one of the best networking
opportunities in the year.
Enjoy the issue.
