TODAY WE CAN only go out to get food and medicine, go to work if you
really have to and take the dog for a walk or something similarly
healthy. All the shops are shut or shutting down and you may, or may
not, be surprised to know that according to a YouGov poll, 93% of the
British voters support the restrictions announced.
This is what Coronavirus, also known as Covid-19, has brought us
to in the space of a little more than ten weeks since the fi rst case
of the virus was announced.
But we have technology. Many of us in the services sector can
work from home – all you need as a basic kit is a laptop, an internet
connection and a mobile phone. A growing number of us have been
working from home for some time and are expert in the ways to
getting things done remotely.
Companies that actually had a business continuity plan and a
management with half an eye on what was likely to happen will
have stress tested those plans a weeks ago. These are the fi rms
that snapped up all the decent £250-£300 laptops in PC World and
left the laggards with just the £500-£600 models on the shelves.
Sadly though, most organisations didn’t even have a plan.
Although there is clearly a long way for us to go with the Covid-19
pandemic, many thoughts are already turning to the future and
what lasting changes may be brought about by the rushed
measures we are putting in place today to stop its spread.
The UK lockdown is probably going to endure for several months
at least and both companies and employees will come to have
recognised the productivity and work-life balance benefi ts home
working brings. We have climate change targets to hit and reducing
all forms of travel will contribute towards achieving those goals.
Now, Wash Your Hands.
