FROM THE EDITOR
The journey to
full-fi bre
Ofcom has recently sent out a progress update in its interim Connected Nations Report
on full- bre which indicates that the service has now reached 2.5 million premises.
Impressive? Perhaps until we learn this represents 8% coverage of the UK.
Rolling out full- bre was always going to be a challenge and
despite Boris Johnson’s lofty ambitions of getting to the full- bre vision by
2025 there is no getting away from the fact that there is a lot of ‘stu ’ to be
built.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Guy Miller, Director - Fibre for
Everyone, TalkTalk at Channel Live recently and although he shares Mr
Johnson’s enthusiasm for bre he was less con dent at the proposed
timelines. For Miller, it comes back to adoption and end user
businesses proving the business case for providers. Clearly when it
comes to the delivery to business the Channel has a massive part
to play.
e challenge? With all the di erent propositions coming to
market from numerous providers, how does the Channel deal
with the various o erings easily whilst taking into account all
the di erent nuances between connectivity providers? As no
clear standards have been produced for this market Miller highlighted
a clear danger by likening it to the railroad build out in the 1800’s
where providers built the infrastructure quickly but for their own
trains which then couldn’t travel on other providers tracks.
If you want an insight into how a prominent Channel provider
is tackling these issues to enable partners and delivering them in
a consumable way, I would urge you to take a look at the latest
interview on the website.
Don’t forget to read the round-up of Channel Live in this issue
(pg.14). It was great to see the market supporting the event and I
rmly believe there will always be a requirement for the Channel
to meet in person to network and develop relationships, whatever
the format.
Enjoy the issue.
