A key question to ask is ‘How will the
transition to SDN impact the network
equipment market?’ However, no mention
of SD-WAN was mentioned by IDC in their
quarterly report.
ere is an awful lot of talk and hyperbole
surrounding SD-WANs and the market is to
a certain extent being driven by successful
use cases.
Speaking to Silver Peak, one of the clear
market leading suppliers thus far in the
nascent market, they believe that today’s
router-centric WAN approaches can’t keep up
with modern network tra c patterns, causing
enterprises to hit the wall.
e vendor says that as such, organisations
are turning to SD-WAN solutions to reclaim
control of their networks and harness the
exibility and speeds of the cloud. Interestingly
their predictions for 2019 and beyond, include
the rise of 5G powered SD-WAN supporting
fast deployment, diverse connectivity and high
bandwidth in organisations.
ED SAYS…
This product grouping
represents a great
opportunity to provide
service excellence and
know-how to clients
as well as generate
income and profi t for
the reseller.
management ethos will deliver customer
service excellence, greater knowledge of our
customers and an increase in productivity.
Enhancing this proposition is the shifting
of the whole video communications shebang
to the cloud and thus doing away with any
‘legacy CPE’. It’s almost de-rigueur these
days and is of course ably supported by a
connectivity market awash with cheap and
omnipresent bandwidth which is joined at the
hip with a complete absence of any awareness
or warning that this should not be attempted
in almost any rural location.
Meanwhile, voice only conferencing units
continue to sell well with better featured
models integrating with call recording
applications.
Headsets
Headsets have bene tted from the up-tick in
uni ed communications sales seen in recent
years plus a number of compliance markets.
ere’s a headset for every conceivable
application; monaural, binaural, xed and
wireless, rugged, noise cancelling, in-ear,
over-ear, around ear, mobile, and every
combination in between.
It’s a great product to have in a portfolio
for repeat sales as due to the nature and
application of the product, headsets tend to
take a bit of a battering and need replacement
every once in a while.
Switches & Routers
Let’s start by taking a look at the markets and
latest (September 2018) gures from analyst
rm IDC who publish a Worldwide Quarterly
Ethernet Switch Tracker and Worldwide
Quarterly Router Tracker.
e worldwide Ethernet switch market
(Layer 2/3) recorded $6.7 billion in revenue in
the second quarter of 2018 (2Q18), an increase
of 4.8% year over year. Meanwhile, the
worldwide total enterprise and service provider
(SP) router market recorded $3.8 billion in
revenue in 2Q18, decreasing 2.5% on a yearover
year basis.
IDC says that 100Gb Ethernet switch
revenue continues to grow rapidly as adoption
by hyperscale cloud providers and large
enterprises accelerates. 100Gb shipments
reached more than 2.8 million ports and
$893.5 million in revenue in 2Q18. 100Gb
now accounts for 13.2% of total market
revenue, compared to 8.1% during the same
quarter in 2017.
In the router market the worldwide
enterprise and service provider router market
fell 2.5% on a year-over-year basis in 2Q18
with the service provider segment, which
accounts for 76.9% of the market, declining
3.9% and the enterprise portion growing 2.5%
year-over-year. According to the analyst rm,
the service provider segment was negatively
impacted by weak CAPEX spending by major
communications service providers.
