VERICUT supports
globally competitive goals
Based in Brescia, Italy, Brawo SpA provides subcontract precision engineering services for a diverse range
of customers from the medical-healthcare sector to welding and food and beverage. Protecting its existing
machine tool investments and assuring its path to greater productivity falls to VERICUT simulation and
verifi cation software from CGTech
Part of Holding Umberto Gnutti
(HUG) Group and employing about
350 people, Brawo’s main focuses
include the hot forging of brass and
aluminium, heat and surface treatments,
and machining processes. “Our
marketplace is global,” explains
Engineering Manager and Research &
Development Manager, Mauro Pini, “and
ranges from the medical-health sector to
welding to food and beverage. When we
talk about mass production, and
therefore of numbers ranging from tens
of thousands to millions of components,
we inevitably end up having to face
ruthless competition, and the biggest
challenge we face is to keep up the
quality level of production.”
The HUG Group is a holding company
with a turnover of around €415 million,
which includes six companies: Almag,
Lofthouse, Berna, Brawo S.p.A., Brawo
USA and Emmebi. The latter, in particular,
specialises in the production of
equipment for group companies and
works closely with Brawo, for which it
also produces moulds.
Bringing advanced manufacturing
technology into the business is how
Brawo has coped with the erce
competition that increasingly
characterises the new millennium.
Choosing where to invest is not easy, but
the company has clear ideas and focuses
on VERICUT simulation and veri cation
software to support its selection.
Mauro Pini talks about ‘disruptive’
technology, but he does not speak about
the technology negatively. Indeed, this
technology, when applied at the highest
level, is the main tool that companies can
use today to face an increasingly
competitive global market. With its many
years of specialisation in the eld of
subcontract precision machining for
customers, Brawo knows something
about being competitive.
“In the past, the geographical location
of a company was crucial, but that is no
longer the case,” Mauro Pini con rms.
“Today, most companies are
multinational, with production sites all
over the world. We have factories in the
United States, which is a great help,
especially for aspects related to logistics
and the performance of the nancial
market, even if they are not decisive
factors. Making great investments
makes it possible to maintain a very high
level of technology which is where we
aim to compete.”
With a total annual turnover of €90
million, Brawo re-invests between 10 and
15% into its technology each year. This
includes new machinery, which is often
very complex, and also rst-class
software, such as CGTech’s world-leading
VERICUT CNC simulation, veri cation and
optimisation package.
A DECISIVE CHOICE
In 2004, Brawo decided to investigate
and invest in the design phase of its
business, focusing on the examination of
any possible defects caused by errors in
the programming of machining cycles
and equipment. This important choice,
dictated by a real need, was also very
