BEST APPLICATION OF CEDAR SHINGLES
WINNER
Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre: Marley Eternit working with Martin-Brooks
(Roofi ng Specialists)
Product:
Western Red cedar shingles from Marley
Eternit are a truly renewable and sustainable
roofi ng and cladding material, with one of the
lowest carbon footprints of any widely used
building product.
The clear timber treatment, MicroPro,
delivers shingles that are preservative treated
with the look of ‘clean’ or untreated timber.
This provides customers with the natural
beauty of cedar right from the start.
Project:
Marley Eternit’s Western Red cedar shingles
were specifi ed for the Sherwood Forest Visitor
Centre in Nottinghamshire to suit the nature
of the building, which includes a mixture of
different materials.
The centre was designed to incorporate
sustainable products to create a low carbon
footprint building, which was also aesthetically
pleasing.
A large open site in a rural location, the
building was a newbuild, which meant that
Martin-Brooks (Roofi ng Specialists) had
to work around all the other trades and
programme dates to carry out and complete
the project. All of the works were completed
within the timeframe and to budget with no
additional costs.
When it came to the installation, the
cladding of the walls was unusual, according
to Martin-Brooks (Roofi ng Specialists), as
there were small individual areas with lots of
detailed work.
The company had to install the helpinghand
brackets and insulation to the structural
walls, which then allowed the company to
fi t the support battens and timber battens to
accept the shingles.
This was made more diffi cult by the fact
there were few straight lines and several
areas of the building were formed to curves,
which meant that the battens had to be cut and
formed to ensure the cladding ran true.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS
“The complexity of this project is what really stood out for us. There is an obvious degree of craftsmanship
involved and the detailing looks outstanding. There were very few straight lines within the building, and a lot
of work has clearly gone into it. The use of the material also blends well within the surrounding environment.”
