APPLICATION USING ROOF TILES
WINNER
Music School at King’s College School, Wimbledon: Tudor Roof Tile Co. working
with Avonside Roofi ng Group
Product:
Handmade high specifi cation clay roof tiles
from Tudor Roof Tile use traditional handmaking
methods, and are suitable for both heritage and
architectural markets.
Project:
Tudor Roof Tile supplied a variety of bespoke
shapes and sizes for the roof of the new £10
million Music School at King’s College School in
Wimbledon.
Designed by Hopkins Architects Partnership,
the Music School has three elements arranged
over three fl oors, linked by an L-shaped foyer.
These comprise a triple-height 200-seater
auditorium; a two-storey rehearsal room; and a
low-height block for teaching and practice.
Located in a conservation area, the building
is sensitive to its surroundings. The exterior
is constructed from handmade brick and
handmade clay roof tiles.
The triangular pattern on the roof of the
concert hall and rehearsal rooms was created
solely from the distinctive shapes of the bespoke
roof tiles. The adjacent linear block (for practice/
teaching rooms) had a different roof form using
matching classical plain clay tiles.
In order to create the complex geometric
pattern, the roof tiles were all made by hand to
a size of 400mm long and 100mm wide, with a
curvature that was within very small tolerances.
Six different designs of bespoke tiles, in two
colour-ways of each were used.
Hopkins Architects Partnership specifi ed
new handmade rooftiles, rather than machine-
made ones as they have a variation of tone and
texture. The manufacturer worked with the
architect to create an arrow head tile profi le.
As the site was small, the logistics of dealing
with material deliveries was challenging, as
storage space was at a premium. It was also
important to take in to account the activities of
the school and the presence of children during
term time.
So as not to disrupt normal operations of the
school, deliveries of building materials were
co-ordinated by the main contractor, so as to
avoid clashes or any congestion on the school
premises.
The complex nature of the build, which
involved both pitched and fl at roofi ng, as well
as the glulam beam structure, was further
complicated by the limitations of working in a
small and confi ned site.
Avonside Roofi ng Group had to work in
programme with drainage contractors, solar
panel contractors and plant contractors, and
was responsible for all works in relation to the
fl at roof coverings and the metal copings at the
interface between the fl at and pitch areas.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS
“The tiling pattern on this project is beautiful. It was good to see the tiles being used
creatively, and the fact that it was completely bespoke to the building worked very strongly in its favour. The
steep pitch lends itself to the design and it just looks great.”
