BEST APPLICATION OF A LEAD ROOF
WINNER
German Embassy: Associated Lead Mills working with Top to Bottom Roofi ng
Product:
Enviro Lead sheet and fl ashing from Associated
Lead Mills is manufactured to the BS EN 12588;
2006 standard for the construction industry.
Carrying a 50-year warranty, Enviro Lead
sheet and fl ashing is durable; has the lowest
carbon footprint of all hard metals; and is up to
100% recyclable.
Project:
For this project, Top to Bottom Roofi ng installed
lead fl at roof gutters, dormer windows ranging
from codes 4 to 8, along with Penryhn Welsh
slates to the pitched areas of the German
Embassy in London.
When it came to the installation, there was
a staircase and hoist, which provided access to
the rear of the building. All of the materials were
taken to the roof level via the hoist and then
taken to the work areas.
Top to Bottom Roofi ng had all of the lead cut
to size as the loading gantry could only take a
ton in weight.
There were time slots for the deliveries
and the main contractor – Coniston – was
keen to keep the pavement area clear. Once
the materials were lifted up to the roof level,
walkway gantries were put in place to access all
of the areas.
Some of the lead gutters were code 8 –
weighing 130kg – which made it diffi cult in the
not so easily accessible areas. There were
gutters at the base of the mansard roofs where
some of the bays had to be pre-formed on the
scaffold above, then the scaffold boards were
removed and the pre-formed bays passed down
into position.
For added safety, there were crash nets and
air bags in place due to the weight of the lead
being used. With a fi re watch programme in
place, lead welding was also kept to a minimum.
Top to Bottom Roofi ng worked closely with
its supplier to keep its cut lead orders to a size
which could be removed from the pavement
within 60 minutes. The sizes of the slate pallets
were also made smaller so that they could be
hoisted directly up onto the gantry.
Stripped lead was cut to manageable sizes
and stored in a designated area. The lead was
pre-formed for the box/valley gutters and fl at
bays. A building paper underlay was installed,
and a wood core roll was installed to the new
and existing substrate.
Pre-formed lead was then handled into
place and fi nished in-situ. Lead sumps were
pre-formed and installed at the start of the
gutter sections. The sumps consisted of lead to
copper overfl ows, which came up through the
base in some cases and through the side wall
in others.
The lead work to the dormers included apron
fl ashings, cheek coverings and lead bays to
tops with wood cored roll joints where required.
Wherever possible lead was pre-formed at the
work station and then manually handled into
position.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS
“This was a great project, which was technically diffi cult to carry out. However, it was
executed extremely well. The delivery team went through hoops when dealing with government in terms
of health and safety and security issues. There was a high level of detail involved in this application.
Fantastic work!”
