APRIL 2019 COMMENT
I’ll take the
high road...
CHRIS BECK, EDITOR chris.beck@markallengroup.com
Scotland features heavily in this month’s issue of Manufacturing
Management – and for good reason. Often maligned, not least
by the Westminster government, as the home of IrnBru and
shortbread, Scottish manufacturing is, as you’ll discover in our
cover story on page 16, home to some of the UK’s most innovative
industrial minds.
I was fortunate enough to spend a week north of the border in
February, and visited some of the nation’s leading manufacturers,
making everything from sausage skins to motors for industrial
vehicles. There, I saw a country with bold visions to get back onto the
global manufacturing top table.
The words of Carlos de Palacio, president of train manufacturer
Talgo, are a demonstration of this vision. When asked about whether
Brexit is having an impact on his company’s plans to open a new
factory in Fife, he replied simply “we are engineers, not politicians.”
(see p7).
This spirit of defiance runs deep across manufacturers nationwide,
but nowhere deeper or stronger than in Scotland. A strong Scotland
is a vital cog in the success of the wider UK manufacturing sector,
and we should be doing all we can to nurture it.
With projects like the £65m National Manufacturing Institute for
Scotland on the horizon, and visions of turning the country into
a hotbed for space travel, the future is clearly bright for Scottish
manufacturing. And frankly, long may that continue.
