QAs a child, what did you want
to do when you grew up?
AI’d always done a lot of acting when
I was younger and studied drama
at school. I wanted to be an actress and
dreamed of appearing on Coronation Street.
I can’t sing or dance, so I didn’t have the
courage to push on with it. Sometimes I
wonder what may have happened if I had
pursued my passion in favour of academia.
QHow did you get into the industry?
AI didn’t do too well in my A-levels
(including German – which is ironic
as I now work for a German company) so I
took a longer route through university. This
involved a diploma in business IT, which
included an internship with Siemens. I
also returned to Siemens for another spell
during my degree before starting my career
there 22 years ago.
QWhat do you like most about
UK manufacturing?
AComing from an IT background,
the digital side of manufacturing is
fascinating. The levels of innovation in the
sector are truly remarkable.
I’ve also always been interested in
how things are made. It doesn’t matter
what it is, I love going into factories to
see that innovation in action. As you can
imagine, Inside the Factory is my favourite
programme on TV.
QHow do you think manufacturing
is perceived by people outside the
industry?
AI feel that people perceive
manufacturing as being critical to
the UK economy and prosperity but often
wonder if people feel that it doesn’t pay
enough or is boring and dirty. I also feel
that sometimes we only hear about the
negatives and an image that factory closures
loom very large. It is for this reason that
we encourage people to come and see
what we do as every day in manufacturing
innovations are coming to life, which
aff ect our lives; a greater connection to the
impact on life helps people connect to what
happens behind the doors of every factory.
QWhat’s the secret to a successful
future for UK manufacturing?
ACollaboration. At Siemens we talk about
‘extreme collaboration’. If we look at
UK manufacturing in terms of scale, we have
great examples in automotive and aerospace
where the Industry 4.0 and digitalisation are
coming to life, which is great. But these are
big global manufacturers and there’s a long
tail in manufacturing. No one organisation
can achieve the kind of productivity levels
we are pushing for, on their own. Sharing of
best practice, opening your doors to people
and pinching with pride – it needs a high
collaborative model in place.
QHow do you spend your spare time?
AI really enjoy swimming. A few years
ago, I challenged myself to complete
the Great North Swim in Windemere. One
mile in the pool is okay, but in the choppy,
cold open water it was quite scary. I’m
glad to say I completed it and have a secret
ambition to do all fi ve in the series.
QOne thing you may not know about
me is…
AI come from family of car traders.
My grandfather ran a car auction,
garage and petrol station in Didsbury.
So, while I am not an engineer, I grew up
knowing exactly how cars work and have
tinkered with a few engines.
