MAY/JUNE 2020 COMMENT
Celebrating
our heroes
CHRIS BECK, EDITOR chris.beck@markallengroup.com
Every Thursday, the nation came together to lean out of front doors
and upstairs windows to clap, bang pots and pans and – in my
neighbourhood at least – set off fi reworks to show our appreciation
for the work being done by the NHS and the doctors, nurses and carers on
the frontline of the pandemic.
It was a heartwarming and inspirational way of celebrating the people
putting themselves at risk to protect others during the past few months and
there are – rightly – calls for a more permanent memorial to their eff orts to
be erected in due course.
However, the contribution to the relief eff ort provided by the UK’s
manufacturers also needs to be recognised. The way industry has stepped
up, whether through high-profi le initiatives like the Ventilator Challenge
UK, or smaller but no-less-important work done by those such as the
University of Sunderland (see this month’s cover story), to meet this oncein
a-lifetime crisis has been nothing short of miraculous.
Your eff orts haven’t gone unnoticed, either. A new survey has found that
three-quarters of the nation’s public have a new-found appreciation for
UK manufacturing, saying that it’s important the sector is protected and
encouraged to grow (see p9).
Many of you won’t appreciate the impact you’ve had: manufacturing is a
humble industry, more than happy to fl y under the radar and let others take
the limelight. This needs to change, though, which is why MM, along with
the other industry publications in the MA Business stable, is proud to launch
#EngineeringHeroes, a special campaign to recognise the work done by the
industry in recent weeks and ensure your legacy is kept front and centre for
as long as possible. To lend your support visit www.engineeringheroes.co.uk. C.Beck
