MARCH 2020 COMMENT
Burning
imperative
CHRIS BECK, EDITOR chris.beck@markallengroup.com
T he fl oods, storms and epidemics that have dominated headlines
over recent weeks may make it feel like the end of days.
Without immediate action, from industry, government and the
wider population, it will be exactly that – and sooner than we could
ever have imagined.
A recent study by Greenpeace and the Centre for Research on
Energy and Clean Air (https://bit.ly/39I9EQ3) uncovered some shocking
statistics: air pollution from burning fossil fuels causes over four
million premature deaths per year, and costs the global economy
$8 billion per day.
Just let those fi gures sink in. If you spend half an hour today on a
gemba walk, or in a weekly operations meeting, the world will have spent
$33 million on issues caused by pollution – be it on caring for people
suff ering with conditions such as asthma or covering sick leave.
Industry has been on the receiving end of a fair amount of blame
over its contribution to the carbon crisis. The age-old image of smoke
billowing from factory chimneys still, sadly, prevails amongst the general
public, despite the manufacturing sector being at the forefront of
minimising emissions.
That’s why this month’s issue of MM may be one of the most
important we have produced for some time. As our fi rst sustainability
special issue, it highlights the work being done across the industry to
reduce the industry’s carbon footprint. As our survey in conjunction
with Inenco (p22) proves, attitudes in manufacturing are starting to
change – we now just need to convince the rest of the world that the
sector is leading the sustainability push.
