PR A ETERRA
“Now we don’t need to
plate our metal, we
can expose it like a
piece of jewellery”
T he traditional leather seats and rare wood veneer
typically found in private jet cabins were left off
the table when Embraer set about designing a
new concept for its recently certified super-midsize jet,
the Praetor 600. Instead, the Brazilian company is paying
homage to the Amazon, and drawing attention to recycled
and sustainable materials.
The concept is called Praeterra, combining the Latin
words for ‘leading’ and ‘earth’. According to Jay Beever,
vice president of industrial design, and head of Embraer
Design Ops (EDO), the idea was to lead the way to a
sustainable future for the planet. “I wanted to choose
materials that would go a bit further than those typically
found on an aircraft,” he says. “I also wanted to show how
technology can lead to sustainability. Often progression
is seen as destroying the Earth, but there are many
innovations that have a positive impact.”

The circuit board motif also
extends into the Upper
Technology Panels, a unique
feature of the Praetor 600 used
to display flight information.
“With the introduction
of OLEDs, we can have a
continuous screen,” says
Beever. “Instead of using
gaspers, oxygen will blow out
from the ends of the panels.
The metal at either end of each
panel has a hockey stick shape,
so air can blow out from the
side. This means you get 270°
of airflow without having to
rotate a nozzle.”
EDO made use of the
continuous OLED screen to add
an animation when the IFE/
CMS is switched on at the start
of service. The Embraer bird
drags a digital banner along
the screens from the tree at
the back all the way to the
front of the cabin, eventually
disappearing and leaving behind
the information screens.
