PERSONALITY PROFILE
What was your career path up to now?
After completing an electrical engineering
degree at Nottingham University, I started at
British Steel in 1995. I spent three years there.
It was a massive operation and as an engineer
you got to see and do everything. I then spent
10 years with a small engineering
consultancy, which placed engineering
resource into OEMs. I was working in the
vehicle security division at JLR, tasked with
delivering the very best anti-theft measures
for the X-Type. I joined Prodrive in 2008
working on a whole variety of projects. It was
technical, and I really enjoyed writing control
strategies, designing electrical architectures
and installing harnesses. After six months I
took on the role of chief engineer, electrical,
then three years later I became head of
electrical systems, to fi nally engineering
director with the responsibility for all
engineering delivery.
What are the best and worst parts of the job?
It’s the mix I really like, both in terms of what I
do and the variety of projects. I might be
customer facing and responsible for strategic

increased voltage of 1000V and
up to 500A operating current.
It features increased make and
break performance under load.
For bi-polar design allowing
charging and dis-charging at

remains the best choice.
For even higher load-cyclye
performance, we have added
a dual-coil option, serving
as a economizer technology.
Holding power consumption is
decreased by 30% to just 4 W.

planning, but I’m still hands on. Another plus is
that we do see the results of our projects very
quickly, sometimes in a matter of just a few
weeks. There can be huge pressure, which
goes hand-in-hand with the short timeframes
that we specialize in. But when you deliver,
the feeling is fantastic. A great example was
the PHEV Transit that we developed with
Ford. To turn around 27 fully-functioning,
road-ready vehicles that were ready to be
trialed by members of the public in just 20
months was a huge task, but when you look at
what we achieved, it was pretty amazing.
What inspires, excites and worries you most
about the electric vehicle industry?
The automotive industry doesn’t have many
moments like this where it’s not natural
evolution. Right now, we’re where the industry
was right at the start – wondering about all the
different types of propulsion. To be an
engineer right now is incredibly exciting and I
think we won’t have a watershed moment like
this for another 50 years. There’s so much
going on and nobody truly knows what
technology might be around the corner.
