OPERATING TRAILERS WITH HYDRAULIC WHEEL MOTORS FROM A TRACTOR CAB
CAN BE SIMPLIFIED SIGNIFICANTLY USING NEW ISOBUS-COUPLED SYSTEMS THAT
HELP TO ENSURE ALL WHEELS MOVE IN UNISON
Finnish hydraulic motor manufacturer Black
Bruin is expanding its On-Demand Drive System
concept and introducing at Agritechnica its new
ISObus-coupled CTR201 control system for trailers and
implements. The new system enables the operator to
focus on driving while the electronics control the wheel
motors via ISObus.
“Tractor drivers have enough to focus on when
operating a forest trailer or a slurry tanker, for
example. Our new CTR201 control system utilizes
the tractor’s ISObus, simplifying the operator’s work
significantly and offering unbeatable practicality.
The system automatically ensures that the trailer is
driven in the same direction and at the same speed
as the tractor,” explains Black Bruin product support
manager Tero Pelkonen.
Hydraulic wheel motors are already commonplace
on forest trailers, and now they are also becoming
increasingly popular in agricultural and earthmoving
applications. For example, wheel motors can be used
on slurry tankers, grain carts, root crop harvesters,
balers, hooklift trailers, trailed sprayers, chippers and
silage, peat or earthmoving wagons.
Trailers with driven wheels offer many advantages
for tractor operators. The additional traction makes
it possible to extend the season or perform tasks in
conditions that would normally halt work. It also
prevents trailers from sinking into wet fields or forests,
avoiding damage to arable land or tree roots. Trailers
with driven axles even save fuel, as heavy loads can
be pulled more easily. The biggest savings are generated
by the fact that a smaller tractor can be used to pull
the same load.
“We also offer a manual CTR101 control system for
tractors without ISObus. The display unit has the same
updated and user-friendly interface as on the CTR201,”
adds Pelkonen.
The CTR201 control system is coupled to the tractor’s
ISObus, which provides the system with all the data
needed to control the trailer’s wheel motors, such as the
tractor’s direction and speed. The display unit makes it
easy to select the desired drive power, after which the
trailer automatically pulls in the same direction and at
the same speed as the tractor. If required, the operator
can also disengage the automatic system and control
the trailer’s drive manually. When accelerating up to
on-road speeds, the operator does not have to

disengage drive, as the system automatically
does so at high speeds.
“There is a very clear customer demand for our
ISObus-coupled drive system, as both end users and
trailer OEMs have enquired about it. For manufacturers
of trailers and axles, the complete drive system makes
it easier to design driven axles and integrate them on
trailers,” says Pelkonen.
Wide range of hydraulic motors
Black Bruin is also presenting its B200 Wheel Motors
at Agritechnica, and its multipurpose BBC Series. Black
Bruin’s motor series is available with a comprehensive
selection of service, parking and emergency brakes,
responding with the latest EU brake regulations for
agricultural trailers and implements.
The four-speed technology of Black Bruin
motors is ideal for applications that require high
speeds. The operating speed can be extended to up
to 70 km/h, and the speed range can be changed on
the fly without having to stop the motor. Black Bruin’s
mobile motors transmit up to 260 kW of power and
45,000 Nm of torque. The displacement ranges from
400 to 12,600 cm3.
Focus on radial piston-cam lobe motors
Black Bruin is one of the world’s leading suppliers of
radial piston-cam lobe hydraulic motors and rotators.
The operating principle of today’s Black Bruin
motors is based on the SISU motor which was first
developed 60 years ago and has been refined and
updated ever since.
One of the first applications for this motor was to
provide hydraulic wheel drive for timber trucks back
in 1959. Focusing and specializing in hydraulic radial
piston-cam lobe technology over the decades has given
Black Bruin expertise that helps to lead the market and
a global network of customers.
Black Bruin motors are today used in an extremely
wide range of mobile and industrial power transmission
applications. In addition to agricultural machinery
applications, Black Bruin motors are used in the forest,
construction, marine, mining and recycling industries,
for example.
