ERGONOMICS & STYLING
Holding fi rm
With OEMs constantly developing highlye
cient, exible and safety-critical
vehicles that increase productivity, there is
a trend towards replacing multiple hydraulic
levers and discrete components with electronic
Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs). ese
integrate fully into custom control boxes and
armrest assemblies, providing operators with
a wide range of new capabilities.
Curtiss-Wright’s HMIs incorporate multiple
functions and can be operated with the use of just
one hand, or via nger or thumb activation. e
interfaces typically incorporate push-button
switches, rotary thumbwheels and joystick
paddles and levers, which variously feature
switched and proportional control of a vehicle’s
numerous features.
e all-new HI grip from Curtiss-Wright is
a heavy-duty, multi-function grip that o ers
a wide range of proportional roller and discrete
push-button switch functions. It is suitable for
use in arduous construction and agricultural incab
applications, and is available tted to Curtiss-
Wright’s JC6000 and JC8000 series joysticks, or as
a stand-alone grip with a range of adapters to suit
standard industrial ttings. anks to its novel
roller design, the class-leading HI grip sets the
102 iVT International Off-Highway 2020
standard for new joystick controller grip
design by incorporating up to four,
ergonomically-placed, easy-toreach
proportional rollers.
Up to three rollers can be
placed across the front
plate of the grip and
positioned within an
easy sweep of the
operator’s thumb, with
the rear roller operated
by the rst nger. e

rst grip designed from
the ground up, o ering le -
and right-handed versions
that lean inward and forward,
featuring a scalloped sha and a handed
rest for optimal operator comfort and operation.
e HI grip is available with optional colors
for the front and rear switch plates and nine
standard colors for each of the buttons and
rollers. In other words the HI grip o ers a vast
array of con gurations. Additionally, the HI can
be supplied with switch icons to industry-speci c
ISO standards or customer-speci c designs. is
use of colors and icons facilitates ease of
operation by associating a grip button with
a machine function.
Safety innovation
Reliability and safety are critical considerations
for construction- and agricultural-based vehicles.
e latest stringent safety standards,
a requirement for precise control in dynamic
scenarios and the need to function reliably in
extreme environments, demand the very best-inclass
measurement equipment.
Curtiss-Wright’s VTS2021 is
a dual-axis, vibrationtolerant
tilt sensor that
o ers an optimal
combination of
performance, safety
and cost for
applications
including boom and
mast levelling on
excavators, levelling
equipment, hedge
cutters, etc. It’s use can

heavily-damped, traditional sensing methods.
