CAT RM400
Mark Eiden, global market
segment manager, Caterpillar
designed primarily for use in soil stabilization
applications in cohesive materials, but also works
well for light asphalt reclamation. e
combination rotor is equipped with 114 pointattack,
carbide-tipped tools. A spade rotor is also
available. e highly productive spade rotor is
utilized solely for mixing soils and is tted with
58 bolt-on spade tools.
Simplifi ed service
Daily service points are grouped and easily
accessible. e engine hood easily tilts forward
with the ip of a switch for easy access to the
cooling system and engine. e cooling system
utilizes a variable speed fan that can be set to
periodically reverse direction for short intervals
during operation. is unique design helps the
system shed accumulated dust and debris, and
keeps the system cleaner for maximum e ciency
and extended service intervals. An optional

onboard air compressor combined with the
tilting rotor hood and large, rear discharge door
makes changing rotor bits quick and easy.
“ e engine hood is interesting,” says Eiden.
“Caterpillar is always focused on part
commonality and we like take advantage of work
done previously. When looking for an engine
enclosure we used the engine hood from our
950M medium wheel loader then turned it
around and deployed it at the front of the vehicle.
Lots of our customers took one look at it and
said, ‘ at looks familiar...’
Delivering results
“ e RM400 is ideal for contractors engaged in
soil stabilization and light asphalt reclamation or
government agencies that perform their own
road maintenance,” says Eider. “It is the perfect
solution for the stabilization of rural paved and
unpaved roads, and for construction building
sites. To drive commonality between our
products, the RM400 even uses the same hood as
the 950M medium wheel loader so there is some
built-in familiarity. With its e cient engine
cooling system and direct rotor drive delivering
maximum engine power to the ground this is
a special product.”

LISTENING TO THE CUSTOMER
“Everything we do is based on what our customers require. We go to the fi eld, meet on job sites, gather
information, ask what areas should we should concentrate on to improve our products,” says Eiden.
“The fi rst request for the RM400 was more power. This was achieved via the C9.3 engine. Previously we
used the Cat C11. Now we are using a smaller engine but receiving more power. Much of this is down to
the cooling system which is extremely effi cient, leaving more horsepower to do the work. The second
request from the market was to make operator controls simpler to operate and easier to learn. We
introduced a brand-new cab with the latest Caterpillar electronics and where all tools are grouped by
function. Lastly, there was a call for more manoeuvrability and visibility. By shortening the RM400 and
adding left-to-right sliding the vehicle is now more manoeuvrable with improved sight lines.”
