mounted ATD (after treatment device), which is
the optimal layout for this tractor range,” says
Carlo Giudici, director of industrial engines at
Yanmar. “Nevertheless, when designing the
engine, we’ve taken into account not only the
specific tractor needs but also other agricultural
sector machines which typically require a great
degree of packaging flexibility. This plan seems to
have worked since we have received strong
interest from several OEMs.”
Big brother
It’s bigger brother, the 4.6 litre 4TN107 will soon
enter series production. It reaches 155kW with
a maximum torque of 80Nm and benefits from
a two-stage turbocharger that gives it a classleading
power density of 34kW/L.
“The 4TN107 was shown at Agritechnica in
tractor configuration with a bespoke ATD which
consists of separate DPF (diesel particulate filter)
and SCR (selective catalytic reduction),” says
Giudici. “This choice allows lowest emissions
performance without compromising on
durability and fuel consumption. After treatment
strategy is a key issue and at Yanmar, thanks to
our decades of experience and hundreds of
thousands of emission-certified engines already
in the field, we know how to get it right.”
When it comes to manufacturing agricultural
diesel engines Yanmar can exploit decades of
tractor know-how. In fact, Yanmar’s first tractor –
the 23hp YM273 – came along in 1963. Today’s
compact range features three series’ ranging in
power from 21hp up to just under 60hp. The
Yanmar’s approach to fuel economy today
can be traced directly to the original
philosophy of founder Magokichi Yamaoka who
started the company in 1912. Because mineral oil
is scarce in Japan he knew he had to get the most
out of every drop. With this in mind, in 1933 he
developed the world’s first cold-start system for
small diesel engines using a horizontal watercooled
unit.
Fast forward to today and the company has
poured all its expertise into two brand new
engines. The first – the 4TN101 – is a 3.8-litre
unit with different power ratings between 55-
105kW and up to 550Nm of torque, scheduled to
go into series production in 2021.
