pick up on the differences between Featherweight and standard
leather, but the costs add up when it comes to weight savings.
Featherweight leather has proven to be 33% lighter than other
traditional leathers on the market, yet shows no drop in strength,
durability or performance.”
“Historically, there have been perceived advantages to working
with fabric over leather or synthetic products, but the benefits to
working with leather far exceed those of fabric,” says Perrone.
“Leather or synthetic leather is much more durable than fabric.
Not only is it easier to clean and maintain, but it removes the need
for dry cleaning chemicals; which, in today’s green-conscious
conversation, is a plus.”
Customisation options
Despite the potential for optimised maintenance and durability that
Perrone Railway believes can be achieved with both leather and
synthetic products, many railway companies have opted to stick
with traditional fabric for railcar interiors. Fabric offers a design
element that, up until now, has not been achievable for either
leather or synthetic options.
Traditionally, fabric has been the preferred choice for rolling
stock upholstery. It is stylish, customisable, soft and comfortable.
“Up until now, customisation options for leather have been
somewhat limited,” says Cognetti. “Embossing, debossing and
stitching are all great options for altering leather, but fabric has been
the preferred choice where pattern and colour are concerned. Our
new printing capabilities are closing this gap, giving the rail market
a completely unique design option for seating.”
The company argues that printed leather and synthetics combine
the best qualities of all seating options. “Perrone’s EnduraLite Rail
synthetic leather boasts a 60% lighter weight than traditional leather
along with industry-leading durability and ease of maintenance and
it is available in any custom colour,” says Cognetti. “Combined with
Breathable EnduraLite, all the benefits of fabric can now be found in
our most popular synthetic offering.”
Working with a team of experienced colour technicians, Perrone
has consistently delivered on its promise to custom match to any
reference. A full colour palette is stocked, but customers often want
to match to fabric or colour codes. “Our sales team works one on
one with our colour department until an exact match is created and
the customer’s design needs have been met,” says Cognetti.
Perrone Railway’s technicians have been working closely with
the design team to develop printed patterns that mimic the intricate
weaves of fabric. “This is an exciting development for us,” says
Perrone. “It elevates our design portfolio to a completely new level.
We have customers sending us fabric swatches from their current
seat covers and asking us to match the pattern.”
Beating the airlines
Some travellers have turned to rail as a secondary method of
transportation, citing convenience, eco-friendliness and legroom as
added perks. “High-speed trains are offering all of the amenities
of commercial aircraft including the luxury of comfortable seating,”
says Perrone. “Passengers expect a certain level of luxury when
travelling for vacation or business and our seating upholstery
options address that expectation.”
Perrone’s rail offering includes three genuine leathers and two
synthetic products that have already proved their value in travel.
Fitting thousands of airline seats worldwide, Perrone’s line of
commercial leathers come in a variety of grains and finishes that
are all easily customisable by printing, stitching or debossing.
