24MASTERPLANNING
We discover what it
takes to create a successful
stadium masterplan and why
the landscape is changing
o, what happens now? We are living in a
period of time like nothing we have ever seen
– something that could only have ever been
imagined in a storyline of the Twilight Zone.
You would think it would be natural to sit here and reel
off the doom and gloom, but the fact is, over the course
of this walk in the dark, there has been far more to say
about the creativity and resilience of everybody involved
in this industry who have come up with brilliant
solutions and intrepid responses.
Across all disciplines of venue management,
engineering and construction there has been more
problem solving, collaboration and desire to share ideas
than we’ve ever seen. Rivals and competitors have come
together to share their expertise in virtual roundtables
and digital discussions, as well as via the release of many
whitepapers and thought pieces – all on what we do next
to safely see the return of sport and fans to the stands.
Much of this is re ected in this issue where we nd
answers, new industry opportunities and ideas from
experts who discuss everything from the future of VIP
hospitality (page 32), to what the landscape looks like
for stadium masterplanning (page 24), and even down
to how stadium restrooms will change (page 40).
Technology has come to the fore in providing us with
the platforms to share these ideas and stay connected
when we have all been kept apart. It will continue to play
one of the most important roles in the re-opening of
venues and new innovation in this eld will be pivotal
for stadium managers to maintain controlled and safe
operation. But, our biggest shout-out goes to the people.
While stadia haven’t been lled with fans, they have been
used as eld hospitals, testing centers, training facilities
and food kitchens to support Covid-19 relief. e verve
shown to carry on has been above and beyond.
Which brings us on to Allegiant Stadium. Despite
all that has happened, the shine has not been taken o
the excitement behind this build, nor has it hampered
its schedule, thanks to some outstanding organization.
Our special 10-page feature (page 12) discovers how the
Raiders have achieved this and what the journey has
been like building a new home in Las Vegas.
Sport will restart, fans will return, and the stadium
business will come back with a game-changing focus that
we can’t wait to explore. We’ll see you then!
