TOLLING IN TURKEY
With over three million vehicles using electronic toll collection in the country,
Turkey has invested substantially in the business of highway tolling
From a driver’s viewpoint, toll
collection might be considered
a simple operation using a tag that behaves
much like a credit card only it is read from
a distance. However, those more informed
know that the mechanisms lying beneath
are complex. First, you need to have
a reliable, precise, 24/7 working system
that provides you with all the tools for
enforcement like the transaction records,
photos and videos, system reports and
everything else that is required for effi cient
management of the system. Furthermore,
the most critical part of this system
actually shows itself in the diffi culty
of joining all the elements together.
Imagine a country where there are over
2,350km of tolled highways and over 1,000
toll collection lanes with 3 million ETC
(electronic toll collection) users. With this
magnitude of data created every day, it
becomes indispensable to build a highly
integrated, accurate and end-to-end system
to manage it all for getting the right toll fee
from the right customer at the right time.
That country is Turkey and its existing
highway length per acreage is one third
of EU countries. As a country rapidly
improving its infrastructure, by 2023, Turkey
aims to expand its highways to 7,850km.
Currently, toll collection operations are
managed by the Turkish highway authority
and some private companies that are
operating according to a public/private
partnership (PPP) model.
