The need for weigh-in-motion
(WIM) systems is simple.
If road authorities can
prevent overloaded trucks
from traveling on their highways
and byways, then damage can be
prevented and the need to repair or
replace roads can be reduced. Being
able to weigh the vehicles while
they are still moving is what
distinguishes WIM from the more
traditional static scale systems.
Rightful recognition
It is notoriously difficult to weigh
a moving vehicle, but over time
the accuracy of WIM products
has markedly improved. As
a consequence, the need to
distinguish these more reliable
systems with an independent
classification has emerged. The
benefits of such a scenario are
twofold: manufacturers of the more
