As Europe’s ITS luminaries gathered
in Eindhoven, in June, one new product
launch in particular embodied a new spirit
of cooperation and interoperability that has
taken root in The Netherlands and looks set
to grow across Europe. Tom Stone reports
Green light for cooperation
At the ITS European Congress in
Eindhoven (June 3-6) Dutch ITS pioneer
Dynniq launched its new GreenFlow for
BlueLights service, which automatically
switches traffic lights to green for
emergency services, with the announcement that
a full-scale pilot of the system is underway in
the nearby municipality of Helmond.
Speaking exclusively to Traffic Technology
International at the event Dynniq CEO Cees De
Wijs explained how the new service is the latest
application to be added to Dynniq’s FlowSense
platform, which was launched at the ITS World
Congress in Copenhagen last year. And went on

to reveal how it is proof of the value of the new
Talking Traffic data exchange infrastructure
being rolled out across The Netherlands.
“The application connects the emergency
vehicles with the intersection so they can put in
a priority request,” says De Wijs. “Our software
looks at the timings of the intersection and
calculates the conditions this can be done. And
then the vehicle gets a reconfirmed green slot
through the intersection. That all happens in
milliseconds, otherwise it wouldn’t work. It’s
nearly real-time.”
With 148 accidents involving emergency
vehicles reported in The Netherlands between
