Working together
GreenFlow for BlueLights has been developed
in partnership with KPN Data Services Hub,
as part of the Talking Traffic initiative which
standardizes ITS infrastructure right across The
Netherlands. It’s an idea that’s close to De
Wijs’ heart and one that he hopes to see
expand across Europe and beyond.
“The Talking Traffic initiative
means hardware infrastructure
and interfaces with software
have been standardized,” says
De Wijs. “So now any service
provider can put his application
service on top of underlying traffic
controllers. I sincerely hope that
such architectures now get adopted
by other countries. So we are pushing
hard for it. That opens up a world where
our FlowSense architecture can run on any other
competitive hardware platform.
“I sincerely hope that, at least in Europe,
we can all cooperate more. When we have
standardization in place – it shouldn’t take
many years, one or two perhaps – then we could
really start to scale up our FlowSence services
internationally. And that makes it interesting
for our competitors, because they can run their
applications on our hardware and of course the
other way around. And I think by establishing
such an ecosystem, in the end we will get
acceleration in applications and add value to
services provided to citizens.”
Indeed, De Wijs’ vision goes way beyond
selling Dynniq products; as a member of the
board for ERTICO and former chairman, he is
firmly focused on what is best for the
ITS community and transportation as a whole.
“I envisage a mobility – and a mobility
management – future where my children and my
children’s children will move freely and safely
across Europe; where they will have access to
beneficial services, no matter what city they are
in; where they will move in vehicles that don’t
make noise, that don’t pollute the environment
and which are energy efficient. That is the future
that I envisage. And think interoperability is key.
There is still a lot to be done. But we have a lot of
commitment from the right entities to help get
us to that situation. And I think we will get
there in the end – and that’s what keeps me
going, by the way.”

2016 and 2017 the new technology could make a
big difference to road safety and traffic flow.
“Sometimes these accidents are fatal,” says
De Wijs, “Often people either panic or are
confused. Now other directions can be put on red,
so it creates more certainty for other road users.
“It requires our next-generation traffic
controller FlowNode and our GreenFlow
application. And you need an onboard device
which deals with the communication, which at
the moment can be a handheld smart device
using 4G LTE, but in the future we will build an
SDK (software development kit) – an API if you
wish – that connects with an on-board unit.”
