of course the cost and work
involved would be very much
higher. It’s not the decision
to opt for CEIV Fresh
certification that is the major
expense: it’s the decision
to handle perishables
professionally that brings
the cost, because you then
need the resources – such
as multi-zone refrigerated
storage and workspaces,
thermal dollies and so
on – to do it. CEIV Fresh is
simply a means of ensuring
you handle perishables to
industry acceptable, uniform
standards – and having this
universally recognised.”
It could also be a tool to win
customers back to airfreight, Siu
adds: “Modern supply chains
have systematically reduced
the use of higher cost airfreight
where possible; so measures to
improve our attractiveness in
‘new’ areas such as perishables
are helping us to replace
‘lost’ revenues. That’s the
justification for investing,
but it’s optional – carriers and
handlers can choose whether or
not to become involved. If they
don’t, they will lose out on new
revenue streams.
“As with everything which
Hactl does, there are two
major drivers: maintaining
Hactl has been quick to endorse CEIV
Fresh regulations
our own competitive edge through providing highest quality
and comprehensive services; and enabling our airline customers
to maximise their business opportunities by equipping them
to compete with the best. Hactl can only be successful if its
customers are, and CEIV Fresh will help create that success. There
is always value in doing the best job you can: that’s our benefit.”
CEIV Fresh is already operating at Hactl, and there are no
issues, Siu adds. However, he cautions: “The obvious change will
come from other parts of the world where standards are currently
not at the same level. If you can imagine a global air cargo
network in which every airport is equally well equipped and well
qualified to handle special cargoes such as perishables, and in
which all elements of the supply chain are digitally connected in
order to provide total transparency – this will raise our industry’s
game, attract larger volumes of cargo, and even open up new
trade lanes. This is Utopia; we are a long way from it today, but
we are headed in the right direction with CEIV Fresh and similar
initiatives. In Hong Kong, and at Hactl, we are setting standards
that we hope others will follow.”
