joint roll-out of the world’s fi rst
digitised main deck containers,
equipped with Transmitting
Portable Electronic Devices,
based on Unilode’s BLE 5.0
technology.
Additional announcements
included new cargo routes,
such as AA Cargo’s seasonal
service from Dallas-Fort
Worth to Munich airport,
and the signing of an MoU to
promote cargo trade between
Amsterdam airport Schiphol
and Hartsfi eld-Jackson Atlanta,
which saw the two airports
agree to share data.
Further evidence of
industry innovation came
with the culmination of ECS
Group’s #NexGenLeaders
2019 Challenge, which saw
CHAMP Cargosystems, Air
France KLM Martinair Cargo
and software developer
Dropslab Technologies
crowned the winners for their
Augmented Reality for Air
Cargo Warehouses project. The
project utilised Vuzix smart
glasses to increases effi ciencies
in handling operations from
freight acceptance to pallet
build-up.
All in all, there was a feeling
of enthusiasm and optimism
at the event, contrary to what
has been a discouraging state of
affairs on paper this year. It just
goes to show that paper isn’t
everything – and digital is the
way forward.
HYBRID
COOL DOLLY
One notable development
in the way of cargo GSE
was the CoolBox by Italian
cargo and ramp handling
company Alha Group.
Developed in-house, the
temperature-controlled
dolly can accommodate
two main deck units at
once, accessible via two
separate openings, and
can even support two
different temperatures
simultaneously.
The hybrid dolly
utilises both a combustion
engine and electric power.
Said CEO Lorenzo Schettini
Gherardini: “We will look
to go electric with the
next CoolBox, particularly
in light of the anticipated
emissions regulations and
in order to meet our ecofriendly
objectives.”
Four of the new
dollies are already
in operation at Milan
Malpensa and Rome
Fiumicino airports, with
the fi rst unit delivered to
Milan in November last
year.
“We are ready to
commercialise in the
market and sell to other
airports and handlers,”
Gherardini added.
