has expanded its services
by launching a renewable
energy vertical to handle the
import of solar panels from
China. Tigers is working with
some of the major solar panel
manufacturers in the industry,
as well as Energy Partners,
a leading energy solutions
provider in South Africa.
“These are exciting times
for Tigers, as we move into the
renewable energy sector, which
is a growing market, especially
in South Africa,” says Paul
Lawrence, Managing Director,
Tigers South Africa.
“As with the recently
opened Tigers e-commerce
facility in South Africa, the
renewable energy vertical is
in line with our progressive
approach to freight forwarding
and embracing new markets.”
Tigers is providing Customs
brokerage, local logistics and
warehouse storage to meet
a growing demand for solar
panels in South Africa. The
as a milestone for both us
solar panels are shipped from
and the industry, air freight
China into Cape Town and
in general is not the only area
Durban, and then distributed
where logistics companies are frequent power failures,
and with such high levels
of sunshine in the region,
it makes sense for people
to invest in solar power
generation,” explains
Lawrence. “We expect the
market for renewable energy
to continue to grow in the
coming years, and Tigers is
ready for the demand.”
At the forefront
Spencer Davern is Air & Ocean
Director at Rhenus Logistics
UK.
“The past few years have
seen an increase in the demand
for sustainability across all
industries, with a growing
expectation on businesses
to provide environmentally
friendly alternatives. While the
logistics sector has long been at
the forefront of intuitive and
smart technology, it has also
been recognised for its work in
integrating greener initiatives
across the supply chain.
“Rhenus specifi cally has put
initiatives in place to become
greener, such as RHEGREEN.
We see this as another
signifi cant step forward for
the logistics industry, offering
customers more sustainable
goods transportation by
calculating environmental
rankings for airlines.
“By considering aircraft
type, fuel effi ciency and
shipment distance, RHEGREEN
evaluates which aircraft is the
most effi cient in terms of CO2
emissions on any given route
and relays that data back to
the user.
“While we see RHEGREEN
can do more to be greener,
with port and road freight
both holding potential for
environmentally friendly
advancements too.
“For example, we develop
all our new warehouse facilities
to exceed expected ecological
standards. Our Tilburg facility
in the Netherlands has been
recognised for its pioneering
capabilities, possessing 13,000
solar panels, an airtight
structure, rainwater toilets
and large glass windows.
The facility recently received
the highest-ever rating for
an industrial building from
sustainability assessors
BREEAM.
“Further to this, we at
Rhenus believe all companies
should ensure energy levels
are optimised. We achieve this
by implementing daylight
control systems, and using
smart technologies such as
lightweight electric fork-lift
trucks, alongside implementing
services such as RHEGREEN.”
Net Zero target
By launching its Net Zero
Carbon programme, Kuehne +
Nagel is actively contributing
to the reduction of CO2
worldwide.
In addition to the
continuous reduction of its
own emissions, the company
now offers its customers
solutions for reducing the
carbon footprint of their supply
chain. With the use of big data
and new digital platforms, the
selection of transport routes
and modes can be optimised
from a CO2 perspective.
As a pioneer in the
industry, Kuehne + Nagel has
also decided to proactively
address the CO2 footprint of
the transportation services
performed by its suppliers,
namely airlines, shipping
lines and haulage companies.
Kuehne + Nagel is actually
targeting comprehensive CO2
neutralisation (Scope 3 of the
Greenhouse Gas Protocol) by
2030. As a fi rst step in this
process, all less-than-containerload
shipments will be CO2
neutral from 2020 onwards.
Kuehne + Nagel’s Net Zero
Carbon programme leverages
three fi elds of action: detection,
reduction and compensation
of CO2. The company has also
started its own nature projects
in Myanmar and New Zealand.
Dr Detlef Trefzger, Chief
Executive Offi cer of Kuehne
+ Nagel International,
commented:
“As one of the leading
logistics companies
worldwide, we acknowledge
the responsibility we have
for the environment, for our
ecosystem and essentially for
the people. We thus support
the aim of the Paris agreement
to limit a global temperature
rise to 1.5°C.”
