UPDATE
NEW CARGO
JETBLUE Cargo falters
at Schiphol
Amsterdam Airport
Schiphol has
announced that total
cargo volumes decreased
by 9.2% to 767,519 tonnes
compared with 2018, but
that total belly cargo volume
actually increased by 0.9%,
following the release of midyear
fi gures.
Full freighter cargo
volumes were down by
16.4%, with a decrease of
full freighter air transport
movements (ATMs) by
14.4%, but total belly cargo
ATMs increased by 3.3%.
The fi gures show that
Shanghai remains the main
destination for Schiphol’s
cargo, this reaching 88,481
tonnes in the fi rst six
months of 2019, despite the
ongoing trade tensions with
the US; this destination is
followed by Moscow, with
38,633 tonnes.
“The mid-year fi gures
refl ect our expectations for a
decrease in overall freighter
volume as we continue to
face slot scarcity, on top of a
weakening of the global air
cargo market,” commented
Bart Pouwels, Head of Cargo,
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
“As a main port for
the Netherlands, we are
concerned about the
negative developments
within the air cargo market
and the consequences it has
for the overall network of
our airlines at Schiphol.
“With a decrease of full
freighters, we may become
less attractive for freight
forwarders, as the forwarders
need a mix of full freight
and belly cargo to operate
sustainably. This may
result in forwarders leaving
Schiphol and the airport
becoming less attractive
for airlines, as belly cargo
contributes signifi cantly
to certain routes. So, the
consequence may be that the
network may be impacted
as well.”
He added that Schiphol
was keen to maintain its
network of destinations
for which it needed to
keep its cargo volumes at a
sustainable level.
OFFERING FROM
JetBlue recently announced
that it would partner with
Aeronex Cargo to launch a
new cargo offering. Aeronex
Cargo, based in Miami, is a
specialist in delivering turnkey
air cargo managed services
to low cost airlines and will
focus on providing fast and
reliable air cargo services
to the registered freight
forwarders as well as known
shippers. Cargo services
will begin with a traditional
air-to-air offering in Fort Lauderdale-
Hollywood International. This service
will fi rst be expanded with a drop-off
point at Miami International airport,
one of the top fi ve busiest cargo
airports in the US, where Aeronex
Cargo will pick up and transport
goods to Fort Lauderdale.
By the end of this year, JetBlue
and Aeronex Cargo expect to open
additional cargo operations in John
F Kennedy International, Los Angeles
International and Boston Logan
International airport.
Ho Chi Minh City opening
CEVA Logistics opened its
new facility in Ho Chi
Minh City at the end of
August, doubling the size of its
local operation.
CEVA’s latest facility is
strategically located and close
to the two cargo terminals of
the country’s busiest airport,
Tan Son Nhat International. A
short drive from the container
port of Cat Lai, it will enable
CEVA Logistics to further
develop its best-in-class
services in Vietnam.
CEVA has a long
established presence in
Vietnam at Ho Chi Minh
City, and in the capital city
of Hanoi it serves one of the
most dynamic and fastestgrowing
markets in East Asia.
In line with the country’s
economic growth over the
last two years, CEVA’s own
business has escalated rapidly
in both freight management
and contract logistics; and
with increasing customer
demand across the board,
the move to newer, larger
premises became essential.
The World Bank is
predicting that Vietnamese
economic growth will continue
to be around the 6.5% per
annum mark in coming
years, particularly as a result
of the free trade agreements
which Vietnam signed with
the European Union and the
US in 2016. The agreements
include abolishing certain
customs duties and creating
easier market access. This
makes Vietnam an even more
attractive production country
for many companies.
