CITY TALK
Happy Anniversary
Brexit
THREE YEARS AGO I had this
idea to write a column each
month about Brexit and sold
it to the boss on the basis it
would form a short narrative
on how the markets, some key
shares and fi nancial indexes
reacted following the UK
decision to leave the EU.
This, the 36th instalment,
has made me think that I
should have had a book deal by
now and be sunning myself on
a beach somewhere drinking
my publishers advance. Alas, I
write this chapter from Sunny
Downtown Andover wondering
how many more episodes of
this Brexit saga there will turn
out to be.
Both FTSE indexes and Wall
St. have taken a pasting so
far this month as the trade
war between the US and China
ramps up. The UK’s blue-chip
index fi nished this period 214
points down whilst the Mid-cap
benchmark FTSE 250 was also
off almost 500 points at 19,279.
Sterling showed a small rise
over the May day bank holiday
weekend but it appeared to be
just a blip as realisation that
the Lab/Con Brexit talks were
going nowhere sunk in on the
Tuesday.
