FROM THE EDITOR
The truth?
It’s always hard to decipher what is going on exactly when times get tough. Some people
like to put on a brave face, others are quite open. My conversations in the Channel
have been mixed over the last month with many people being put into furlough simply
because new business has dried up.
Since our last issue, the Government has extended the furlough scheme until the end
of October with the caveat that businesses will have to share some of the cost from August
onwards. It is quite simply an amazing initiative which will save many businesses from
making redundancies, or enable them to make less. Currently the scheme is covering about
8 million jobs, without it experts believe the UK would be heading to an unemployment rate of about
20%.
As I type the main stream media has leaped on the latest unemployment gures from the O ce of
National Statistics. e latest gures show a rise in the numbers claiming employment bene ts which
was to be expected after the Government has made unemployment-related bene ts available to those still
employed. Typically, the headlines paint a di erent picture.
e experts will continue to speculate what it all means, the truth is we won’t know as we are looking
at the tip of the iceberg at the present and there will be a clear lag between reality and when things get
reported. Currently the ONS has reported an unemployment rate of 3.9%, the only thing we do know is
this is going to rise.
It is easy to nd grim news right now, but there are some amazing things happening in the UK
which is all being underpinned this market, the Channel. e move to Remote Working was facilitated
by the Channel, you can bet the road to recovery will also be a similar story. Comms Business is looking
to shout loudly over the coming months as businesses start preparing for the ‘New Normal’. If you wish
to get involved in our latest initiative and support the UK’s economy drop me or one of the team a line.
ings will get rough I’m sure, but the Channel is going to be fundamental in the recovery process,
no matter how long it takes, let’s not forget that.
Enjoy the issue.
