The great
debate
What a time to be in telecoms! I have been glued to the newswires
over the last few weeks as various political parties try and garner
support for the upcoming election. Of course, the news that
caused the biggest stir in our market was Jeremy Corbyn’s plans
to nationalise Openreach and o er free broadband to all.
I was hoping that our market would get a mention during the
Johnson-Corbyn debate on ITV but the conversation barely touched
on it. As usual, the big-ticket items are still Brexit, the NHS, and
putting an end to austerity.
If Labour win the election (looking at the polls that is a BIG
if) the question will be can they actually implement this policy
and how long is that likely to take? e market won’t take
this lying down either, especially after spending billions on
the bre roll-out to date. e huge worry is the pace of the
rollout will slow tremendously as we could nd ourselves in
a legal wrestle for a few years while all the details are ironed
out. is will only halt any further investment and put us
behind our current timeline.
What will this do to the Channel? e details of the plan, at
the time of writing, have been so vague we don’t know. What
we do know is that ‘free-anything’ in the business world doesn’t
make sense. e support of these broadband services alone will
be laughable and will only result in a one-way nger pointing
contest which is going to be terrible for customers.
What I am sure of is, the dynamism in our sector will
continue whatever happens. e entrepreneurial spirit is too
strong and I couldn’t be happier about that.
You will nd many of those entrepreneurs in this issue.
Enjoy
