EDITOR’S COMMENT
2020 HINDSIGHT
customary to look back over the previous
IN THE DECEMBER issue of Eureka! it is
year and re ect on what the year has
brought. In the case of 2020, however,
such an overview feels ever so slightly
redundant, given that one thing has
dominated our lives and has served
to make the year one that few will
remember with fondness.
It’s fair to say that most of us will be
only too happy to see the back of 2020.
Even for those who have not been directly
a ected by COVID-19, the disruption has
been enormous. If one con nes oneself
just to the social changes, we can number
lockdowns; social distancing; hoarding;
the wearing of masks; the virtual
elimination of physical contact; and, of
course, working from home.
This is before one addresses the
deleterious e ect the pandemic has had
on our business and professional lives.
GDPs have been slashed – as have many
companies’ revenues – while millions
have spent much of the year furloughed,
relying on the government to pay their
salaries (at least in part). Sadly, many
jobs have not survived this upheaval and
unemployment has inevitably risen.
To gauge just how profoundly 2020 has
altered our perspectives, it is interesting
to try to imagine it without the pandemic.
Think of the events one would have
attended; the family gatherings one
might have enjoyed; the overseas trips
one might have taken – even the sporting
or cultural events that would have taken
place. Think of the people one might have
met or the business opportunities.
Hard , isn’t it? That world seems

impossibly distant now. But gradually,
bit-by-bit, we will return to it. Some
changes may be here to stay, but most
will gradually fade and we will return to
something recognisable as normality.
So, while it may seem fruitless to try and
nd a bright side to 2020, the one I would
suggest is that it is nearly over and 2021
has to be better.
